Fly 5k
Racing returns, and the future of Fly 5k
As most of us will have seen, United Kingdom Athletics and Run Britain have released guidelines on running events as these begin to happen again from August.
They will look very different, with lots of safety measures required of course, and things like staggered starts or time trials are likely to be common for smaller events. Larger events still seem a way off, and as far as I know parkrun has indicated that they won't return to the UK (or any country) until they can run events as normal.
The full guidelines from run Britain for road and multi-terrain events can be downloaded here: https://www.runbritain.com/covid-19-uk-road-race-guidance.
Rest assured Fly 5k events will continue unchanged (although I might need a helper every now and then), and I hope that as racing returns you'll still find it's something you want to be a part of.
I think we've built a very welcoming and friendly running community here, and there is absolutely no reason why even when parkrun returns we can't continue, and allow people to log their parkrun times on Fly 5k aswell. It gives us a place to share our runs, good or bad, and also across a much wider geographical area than any one local race, and with friends in other places. I'm delighted with how much people have enjoyed Fly 5k, I have no doubt that real racing is where everyone's heart is, but I think we have a good foundation here for something that (I hope!) you'd like to carry on being a part of.
All the best, and see you at a real race some time soon!
