Results from Event # 11, 15th August 2020

It was a day for rain jackets and pigs in blankets for many today, but that didn't prevent 146 of us from turning up and doing our thing. For many members of St Albans Striders, Fly 5k was the first 5k of a four mile time trial, the club's first (socially distanced) running event since lockdown.

We had runners from 29 clubs including a first appearance from Shefford Runners.

Despite the weather, or perhaps because of it, there were lots of Fly 5k PBs - 31 in total. A massive well done to Mark Sanders and Emmanuelle Bentley-Sanders for lifetime PBs, you're getting faster and faster! Christine Taylor who smashed her all time PB going sub 23 and some, with 22:38, and Richard Sved, who got closer again to his pre-knee surgery best of seven years ago with a 22:57.

Special mention also to a quarantined Stuart Kirbyshire who did 5k of laps around his back garden!

Well done to Emma Stepto (Cornwall AC, VW50-54), Brian Yates (Harpenden Arrows, VM75-79) and Alex Moffatt (St Albans AC, JM15-17) who all took further time off their own age category records today.

A big hand to 25 of our regulars who have hit ten Fly 5ks this week:

Justine ANDERSON Melanie BARTON Matthew BEDFORD Emmanuelle BENTLEY-SANDERS Katie BUNTING Greg CHURCHILL Kate DIXON Chris EDWARDS Richard FOX Ivan GHOUSE Rebecca HEMMANT-LOW Dawn KEVEREN Cathy LEAHY Stuart MIDDLETON Joanna PARKER Jenna PICKERING Dominic REED Craig ROWAND Mark SANDERS Patrick SMEARS Emma STEPTO Joanne TANG Denise TINANT Elaine TUIT Geoffrey WHITE

Our race winners are both familiar names. Well done to Dunstable Road Runners' Darren Deed for his third Fly 5k, third win, third age graded win and another sub-15 minuter. And that was with rain and headwind!

Also a very impressive time from Lesley Locks of Aldershot, Farnham & District taking her third consecutive win in the three events she's taken part in, and just one second away from her own women's record with 18:19.

Our podium for this week looks like this:

Men 1) Darren DEED, Dunstable Road Runners (14:56) 2) Will BOWRAN, St Albans AC (17:01) 3) Tom HALLING, St Albans AC (17:19)

Women 1) Lesley LOCKS, Aldershot, Farnham & District (18:19) 2) Emma STEPTO, Cornwall AC (18:28) 3) Ali YOUNG, Chiltern Harriers (19:21)

Age Graded 1) Darren DEED, Dunstable Road Runners (93.08%) 2) Emma STEPTO, Cornwall AC (89.44%) 3) Zelah MORRALL, Cornwall AC (85.79%)

Well done to them, and to everyone who ran today!

The full results have been published to the Facebook group. The website will be updated shortly.

And finally, next week is another inter-club competition. More details in the invite to follow!

Maybe it's because I've been out of the running game myself now for a little while, but when Dani's post came asking for people to submit three words that summed up Fly 5k for them, the word "running"

Dear Fly 5kers, It is with a heavy heart but with very fond memories and lots of new found friends, that today we announce that Fly 5k, the weekly event as we know it, will be coming to a close at our

The hungover Fly 5k after the hosts night out! We enjoyed a beer (or two) and cracked open a really horrible old bottle of Cava, which I blame for the submission form problem! Thanks for all your pati
