Results from Event #15, 12th September 2020

Fly 5k #15 started quietly. No Sydney Striders posts when I woke up, and after a good stretch, a strong coffee, and a final check around the course, the flag dropped at 8am.. in silence.

But then things began to happen. Greg Churchill's time came in from Sydney. A trickle more early time submissions, and bang - our first lifetime PB! Justine Anderson goes under 30 minutes. I say lifetime, it was only last week she set the last one! 30 minutes is a great barrier to break so well done.

And so it went on, with Nicola Andersson getting a lifetime PB of 26:46, Kate Dixon going under 21 minutes for the first time in her life, Isabelle Head running 25 minutes dead for another PB (her 5th 5k in her life for the JW10 runner), Laura Hicks with 19:19 using an interval technique to get her fastest ever time, and then Alex Paul taking a magical one second off his 5k PB with 15:56 round the track!

When you think how many times in your life you've laced up your shoes and gone out for a run, going the fastest you've ever gone for a certain distance is always going to be something really special.

All this interspersed with posts from people getting out and just enjoying their run, whether it be a return from injury, a nice early morning holiday run, or... sprinting down the High Street dressed as Captain Marvel and Spider-Man!! And those of you who struggled today - well, you did it!

So here are the stats. 150 runners, 29 clubs, 32 Fly 5k PBs, 10 first timers, 70 years between the oldest and youngest competitor, 6 Clair/Claire/Clares, 4 Brians, 4 Rogers and 750 kilometres raced.

At the sharp end we had an excellent top three for both men and women. With the podium men's times averaging aroud 16 minutes, Will Bowran of St Albans AC took the win in a time of 15:45, two seconds away from his personal best. For the women a huge well done to Sarah McGrath, also from St Albans AC, for her first Fly 5k win with 18:52, just one second from her PB.

Janice Nisbet of Harpenden Arrows topped this week's age graded rankings with 83.62%.

Age category records were broken today by Alex Paul (SM25-29), Laura Hicks (SW30-34), Janice Nisbet (VW65-69), Louise Crosby (VW60-64) and Isabelle Head (JW10).

Congratulations to the following people who ran their 10th Fly 5k today: Julie CURTIS Paul GREAVES Paul GUY Sara HEAD Brian JUDKINS Martin MEDFORTH June ROWLANDS Roger SANT Karen SHEARD Clare TYLEY Wendy WALSH Brian YATES

Maybe it's because I've been out of the running game myself now for a little while, but when Dani's post came asking for people to submit three words that summed up Fly 5k for them, the word "running"

The hungover Fly 5k after the hosts night out! We enjoyed a beer (or two) and cracked open a really horrible old bottle of Cava, which I blame for the submission form problem! Thanks for all your pati
