Fly 5k
Results from Event #19, 10th October 2020
A big but not record group of walkers & runners turned up for Fly 5K event #19 - even more surprising considering many were carrying sore legs after their Fly Marathon efforts last Sunday - and a great way to show the positive mental benefits of running on World Mental Health Day.
A big warm welcome & well done to 12 first time entrants to Fly 5K this week:
Dan SMITH, Sam MELDRUM, Richard NORTH, Stu PARKES, Steve WITHERS, Lydia OTTAVIO, Anton CERVANTES, Geraldine CARRIE, Lucy NEBEL, Samantha FERGUSON, Abi CHAPMAN, Fiona CROOK
Kudos to 5 athletes who notched up their 10th Fly 5K this week:
Lesley LOCKS, Damon LYNCH, Sylvia MOSS, Marc PHILLIPS, Jo PUTTOCK
It was an early start today with our first 2 results coming in overnight from Sydney Striders in Australia and giving the rest of us a very high standard to aim for, and we didn't disappoint with 28 of you brilliant athletes setting a new personal Fly 5K best - huge well done to you all (sorry too many to list individually!).
In addition 3 of these athletes also set new Fly 5K age category records. Well done to:
Claudine BENSTEAD, Ian SAGE, Lionel MANN
There were so many reasons given why Fly 5K is the motivation to 'go out at all' Phylidda Jones, 'another good reason to run' Cory Dyck, the reason to 'start running and get fit again after a long running break' Samantha Ferguson and big thanks goes out from everyone here to Graham Smith who started this all off with Event #1 on the 6th June. It's inspirational to see everyone's achievements. Thanks Graham Smith!
It was great to see everyone's lovely photos and personal run reports from the Australian surf to the Lochs of Scotland and the autumnal backdrops across the UK. Keep them coming in!
And finally to the leader boards. Two of our younger and quicker Fly 5K runners returned this week after a bit of a Fly 5K break to take the top 2 spots on the Men's podium namely Will Bowran and Oscar Loveday from St Albans AC, swiftly followed by Cory Dyck from Chiltern Harriers taking the 3rd spot on the way to his new PB.
On the Women's podium some very familiar names had another great week with the top finishers being Lesley Locks (AFD), Claudine Benstead (Okehampton AC) and Zelah Morrall (Cornwall AC) in that order.
And on the Age Graded leader board Claudine Benstead (1st) and Lesley Locks (2nd) were joined by Janice Nisbet of Harpenden Arrows in 3rd.
Report by Steve Bowran.
