Results from Event #54, 29th May 2021

The sun came out (for most of us) and it was a humid, warm Fly 5k for a change. Finally, my yoga practise salutes the sun have started working. Thanks to all 185 of you who ran today.

A little quieter than usual in terms of runners but still buzzing on engagement, encouragement and passion! And wait till you see the results today! You guys are incredible.

Welcome to all 8 of our first timers today. We hope you have had a great run and enjoyed the Fly 5k experience. Please tell all your running friends!

We’ve had school friend runs, a 50th birthday run and lots of Fly 5ks as part of longer runs; The Irish Virtual 10 miler, MWL Virtual 10k Mob Match and the Virtual London 10k to name just a few. A special mention for Jethro Offemaria who ran his Fly 5k today for the National Autistic Society as part of this year's Virtual London 10km.

Susan and Mike didn’t disappoint us with another Fly as part of the South Downs Way Ultra. Do they ever stop running? Well done guys. You’re an inspiration.

There was a lot of talk of mushroom runs in Harpenden today! Or was it a whistle? A Truffle? Even a boxing glove… Or part of Donald Trump? No one is quite sure. Great to see St Albans Striders out together in force today with some cracking results and a Lifetime PB of 20:14 from fellow host Kate Dixon. Way to go Kate!

We had beach runs, country runs, ParkRun routes, castles, lots of happy dog runs and even bee swarms!

We really do love seeing all your race selfies and we had some brilliant ones this weekend.

An amazing 19 people ran Fly 5k PBs this morning. It must have been the weather fuelling all that speed!

We had some super fast times today. Tony Roberts ran a 5k PB by exactly 1 minute. Achieving his goal to go sub 19 at the age of 55. He also clocked a new 1k PB by 9 seconds, 1 mile PB by 10 seconds and a 2 mile PB clocking 12:07!

We had 45 different running clubs taking part today with two new clubs joining us; welcome to Ivybridge Staff Squad and North Shields Polytechnic.

And thanks for your continued support to all the runners from our regular clubs: Ampthill and Flitwick Flyers, Athena St Albans, Bodmin Road Runners, Bournemouth AC, British Airways AC, Bury Pacers, Chiltern Harriers, Cornwall AC, Dunstable Lions Running Club, Edmonton Running Club, Exmouth Harriers, Fairlands Valley Spartans, Garden City Runners, Harpenden Arrows, Havering 90 Joggers, Havering AC, Hedge End Running Club, Herts Phoenix, Ivybridge Staff Squad, Lonely Goat Running Club, North Herts Road Runners, North Shields Polytechnic, Okehampton RC, Phoenix Striders, Pickering Running Club, Pitsea Running Club, Porth Eirias Runners, Reading Joggers, Run Harpenden, Run Redbourn, Rushcliffe AC, Southern Counties Vets AC, St Albans AC, St Albans Striders, St Austell Running Club, St Edmunds Pacers, Staple Hill Runners, Stopsley Striders, Sydney Striders, Tri-Force, UK RunChat, Vegan Runners, Watford Joggers, Wheathampstead Warriors, Winterton RC and Your Town Runners.

Back by popular demand, Fly 5k Run Bingo. It wouldn’t be the same without a game of run bingo when I’m hosting, though the next one might be changing up a gear or two. Here are the results:

1. Mike Bullock AGAIN, this time with 4310 points! The next Fly Bingo will have that loop hole fixed! 2. Justine Anderson with 407 points. Congratulations on your PB today too! 3. Daniela Petriani with an impressive 375 points, despite being too hungover to actually do the maths!

You are all amazing, but these regulars have reached a milestone today:

50 Fly 5ks - Justine ANDERSON, Mark FAUGHNAN, Diane HUNT 30 Fly 5ks - Helen GIFFEN, Katy WILDE 20 Fly 5ks – Matthew CHILDS, Claire DAVIDSON, Alastair PENMAN, Daniela PETRIANNI, Ben SCOTT 10 Fly 5ks – Nicola ASTBURY-EVANS, Karen EVERSLEY, Rebecca HODGSON-JONES, Kirsty HOULDRIDGE

And finally, here are the podium results you’ve all been waiting for.

Darren Deed equals the men’s record and sets a new age graded record too! Tom Halling in second took a Fly 5k PB AND a Lifetime PB! Oh and look who came third? Our very own Fly 5k King making an appearance, it was obviously those mushrooms.

Best quotes of the day below:

  • Comfort zone swapped for mushroom zone (or truffles!) – Helen Cartlidge, St Albans Striders

  • Just the perfect Day – Fergus Dalton, Wheathampstead Warriors

  • Yeay. Smashed my PB. Lifetime PB. That has significantly cheered up my slightly grumpy too much wine, too little sleep feeling xx – Kate Dixon, St Albans Striders

  • Fly 5k and probably 5 plus flies swallowed – Julie Horrocks, Harpenden Arrows

See you all for another Fly 5k next weekend and thanks everyone for making today such fun hosting for me. I love the banter, the photos, the love, the encouragement and the interaction.

Thank you all, especially to the weather. Definitely a Mr Blue Skies theme today.

Maybe it's because I've been out of the running game myself now for a little while, but when Dani's post came asking for people to submit three words that summed up Fly 5k for them, the word "running"

Dear Fly 5kers, It is with a heavy heart but with very fond memories and lots of new found friends, that today we announce that Fly 5k, the weekly event as we know it, will be coming to a close at our

The hungover Fly 5k after the hosts night out! We enjoyed a beer (or two) and cracked open a really horrible old bottle of Cava, which I blame for the submission form problem! Thanks for all your pati
